What Have I Been Up To? Just Shopping…Organic Shopping That is!

OK, Let me calm myself a bit before I excitedly write about my new found treasure in Organic Eating and Health in Trinidad and Tobago, and an organic eating and health store. OK I’m calm now …. No, I’m not. I’m still excited and smiling from ear to ear as I write this haha!….

Discovering An Organic Eating and Health Store

I had been driving on Mucurapo Road for some time and yet I never saw the little sign at the side of the road beckoning me to explore the hidden organic jewels that awaited me on the inside.

Then somehow I happened to slow down at Santa Maria Plaza one day and there it was …. A Mecca of Organic food just waiting … (Pause for a deep breath)… an organic eating and health store.

For years my wife and I had great difficulty when it came to my son’s nutrition because of his allergy, actually more his digestive intolerance, to gluten and casein. That made it a bit difficult and because of this we had to be very creative in the kitchen, some of which you all have seen many posts ago (remember those gluten free recipes?). We still experiment but not that much now since I found my secret weapon in this battle in the form of Be Free Foods located at Santa Maria Plaza on Mucurapo Road.

A Wide Variety in One Store

I was like a kid in a candy store …. an organic candy store lol! The shelves were lined with any and everything organic for those who suffer allergies from a myriad of foods such as peanuts, gluten (flour), casein (milk) and other chemicals. Although I did not plan anything I just happened to have my camera in the car that day and decided to take a few shots to show you all what is available at the store.

What’s inside this Organic Eating and Health Store

I was amazed at the gluten free rice spaghetti. We were able to cook a wonderful meal of spaghetti and minced beef in tomato sauce for the first time in two years since he has been on the gluten free casein free diet.
There were a variety of bars and cookies that were all natural and wholesome.

Now I can even buy sweets that he can enjoy without worrying about the labels.
My son loved this with almond milk, and the corn flakes did not get soggy as other cornflakes.
It was crunchy and had a real “corn” taste. I have to remind myself that I need to buy another box next time I go “Organic Shopping”
What about bread? Yeah! Bread. They even had gluten free bread.
Omg! Hot Dogs without any nitrites or antibiotics?…Pinch me I’m dreaming!…
OK I’m up now.
Although not gluten free, this grilled veggie pizza caught my eye. Maybe I’ll give it a try next time ……if it isn’t sold out.
And they have gluten free, casein free ice cream.
The fridge was filled to capacity with all sorts of frozen treats from ice cream to ice cream bars.
I bought this vanilla flavour ice cream for my son
It was a joy to see him having ice cream after a very long time.

For the health conscious there’s also a range of snacks…from chips to dried fruits.

Finally, I like to add that the place is as attractive as the service. The owner is very friendly and helpful and would patiently answer any question you have about any product on the shelves.

So, I have found my piece of organic heaven and showed you a lot of the items, some of which I bought or plan to buy.

Now that you know where to find Be Free Foods be sure to visit soon even if it is for a bag of that really healthy veggie chips. And, if you’re tall enough be sure to leave a little “graffiti” of appreciation on the pole. If you visit you’ll know what I mean.

Anyhow, see you soon with another wonderful post.  Do leave your comment about this post on organic eating and health store in the comment box below.

  3. Hi Tavrina,

Be Free Foods is still open but they have moved a little lower down on Mucurapo Road before Santa Maria Plaza. You can’t miss it.
