Discover the Newest Weight-Loss Breakthrough
This popular bean has been in cultivation since the 15th century. In its green form, it is exported and then roasted up to about 220 degrees C. for 15 minutes to impart the familiar coffee flavour and aroma that varies among different blends. The coffee blends are mostly sold in vacuum packs, pre-grounded. Instant coffee is most popular among coffee drinkers. On an average, over 1.7 million cups of coffee is consumed each day, making coffee the most popular drink worldwide (Goldberg, 2003). Today, many studies have discovered the benefits of drinking coffee, specifically its metabolic and nutritional impact. However, many still overlooked the additional health benefits of green coffee beans.
Green Coffee Bean Extract
Green coffee beans are dried coffee beans that were not roasted. Green coffee contains sucrose, polysaccharides, proteins and minerals. It also contains a large amount and variety of polyphenols, typically chlorogenic, caffeic, ferulic and 4-coumaric acids; however the coffee bean loses much polyphenols during the roasting process. The amounts of other organic acids such as malate, lactate and quinic acid may rise as a result of roasting. Therefore, the coffee brew can be regarded as being naturally low in digestible proteins, carbohydrates and fats. One such polyphenol that has proven to be beneficial in protecting humans against the oxidative damage of macromolecules is chlorogenic acid, which is significantly reduced during the roasting process.
The Chlorogenic acid in coffee is also known as coffee bean extract, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid Green Coffee extract. Its amount in regular coffee and espresso is unreliable. Green coffee bean extract is generally consumed as a supplement, because the liquid from unroasted coffee beans have a bitter unpleasant taste. As a supplement, it has many positive effects. Some of these positive effects are:
- Increase well-being,
- Glycemic control,
- Weight loss,
- Decrease blood pressure,
- Increase homocysteine,
- Decrease insulin, and
- Decrease blood glucose.
Lose Weight with Green Coffee Bean Extract
One of the most recognized benefit of green coffee bean extract is it's anti-obesity properties. The caffeic acid or chlorogenic acid is mainly responsible for this. This was proven in a small trial study performed by Dr. Joe Vinson, Phd, a professor of Chemistry of the University of Scranton. The study was published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity journal. The 22-week trial study was done by 16 overweight men and women. The participants (8 men and 8 women) were each given a high dose and a low dose of green coffee bean extract, as well as a placebo, in three separate six-week experiment.
The participants were encouraged to consume a similar number of calories each day during the course of the experience. At the end of the 22 weeks, participants recorded a weight lost of 17 pounds, 4 % of body fat. The weight lost was also most significant during the high dose sessions. Dr. Vinson, concluded that weight lost was significantly due to the chlorogenic acid present in the coffee bean extract.
Dr. Vinson believes that the chlorogenic acid inhibits an enzyme (glucose-6-phosphatase or G6P enzyme) which causes an increase in the blood sugar release from muscles and liver into the body. This causes the stabilization of blood sugar levels which allows for better energy, hormone function, mental clarity, and detoxification capabilities – in addition to weight loss. The chlorogenic acid also burns more fat by boosting the metabolic output of the liver. This helps prevent fat absorption, support the growth of lean muscle mass, and thus hinder weight gain.
Does Green Coffee Bean Extract Really Work?
In conclusion, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid improves body weight and lipid metabolism. Though other small studies supported Dr. Vinson findings on green coffee bean extract, some nutrition and obesity experts are not so convinced. Since Dr. Vinson's study is one of the few studies done on green coffee bean extract, it is the most quoted study to prove the weight-loss effects of green coffee bean extract.
Also, some critics claim that the study can not be reliable enough because it was funded by the Applied Food Science Inc. which is based in Texas. The company “engages in developing and marketing technologies for use in food products, beverages, and nutritional supplements” (source).
Others, such Dr. Caroline Apovian, professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine, insists that the study is unclear as to what kind of diet and exercise program the patients were on. They conclude that the impact of the coffee bean extract may not be so significant and the results could be misleading.
Dr. Oz Speaks Out About Coffee Bean Extract
In order prove that green coffee bean extract can help people lose weight, Dr. Mehmet Oz, performed his own experiment with 100 female volunteers. He confirmed the average participant who took the supplement lost an average of 2 pounds in two weeks, while participants who took the placebo lost an average of 1 pound during those two weeks.
Let's look at the rave review of green coffee bean extract by Dr. Oz in one of his shows.
