A Wonderfully Spicy Beef Steamed Wontons

When I saw the picture of those spicy beef steamed wontons by Sarika in my facebook group I thought that was certainly a comfort food I’d like to try. Those wontons skins were stuffed with meat, sealed and then steamed. Most times stuffed wonton skins are fried crispy, but this time it was steamed. Steamed wontons can be a good addition to a simple but wonderfully flavoured soup. This is definitely a recipe to try.

You may have heard of Chinese steam dumplings, but that is another reference to steamed wontons. If you use the prepackaged wontons for this recipe, you will find it very easy to make. However, you can also make your dumplings from scratch. A basic dumpling recipe will do just as well from scratch. Of course, the dough should be well kneaded and left to rest for a little while. Roll out small balls until they are as thin as the prepackaged wontons. Then fill each skin.

The fillings for the wontons skins can vary. If you don’t eat beef, you can use chicken or if you are vegetarian, you can use only vegetables such as carrots and cabbage. The vegetables are usually shredded and flavoured with chive, onion, soy sauce, ginger, salt, sesame oil and pepper. Making this recipe could certainly be very satisfying.

One technique to note once you have placed the filling into the wonton skins is to first dip your fingers in water place on the edges and fold the skin in half to enclose the filling. Then press and seal to remove the extra air. If you’re using the dough from scratch you may not need to wet your fingers. Do fold several pleats to the top before you seal the edges together. Your dumplings with have a traditional and exquisite look.

  1. After watching the video it does not look like you use 3 cups of water in the pan. That seems like too much water. Can you please clarify? Thanks you. I can’t wait to make this.
